Happy Steak and BJ Day

I was unaware of this "holiday" until someone (a girl :D -- engaged though :( ) posted about it on Facebook. Apparently, as a corollary to Valentine's Day, which tends to be girl-centric, it is "Steak and BJ day". So, a girl is supposed to give her guy a nice steak to eat for dinner ... and some after dinner entertainment.

For the record, I will most likely be receiving neither this year. I received neither last year as well.

My caring female readers should correct this.

Other guys, however, seem to have had more success with the hard sell on this topic.

Steak and BJ Day Success -- for someone else.

6000 children starve to death in India EVERY DAY

This is a particularly sad video that I found on Youtube. It's about the nearly 6000 kids that starve to death in India every single day of the year.

It's times like this that I have to reflect on how lucky I am. I could have been born into this life, but I wasn't.

Also, I think that it tells all of us that we need to do what we can to help our fellow human beings. If I could, I would help these people. I am doing my part by trying to advance science.

Closing in on 200 Visitors Per Day for My Blog

I just wanted to write a quick post to note that my blog is closing back in on 200 visitors per day. A few months ago, it had traffic levels well above this, but then I changed over to www.futuretwit.com from my former blogspot address, and the traffic levels fell to where I was barely getting over 100 visitors per day for a while.

I am also much more optimistic about the traffic this time. The cool thing is that about 70% of my traffic, on average, comes from search engine traffic, which means that it might have a lot more staying power than the traffic that comes from Twitter. Also, the traffic this time around is spread out over a lot more of my entries than it was before. Previously, I used to have one or two entries that would get all of my traffic and the rest of my entries would have a few hits here or there.

If you have any strategies to generate traffic for my blog, please leave them in a comment below. Thanks.

How To Build a 1000 Hit Per Day Blog in 1 Year

Brain Blogger logoImage via Wikipedia
I have been thinking about the topic of building a blog lately, specifically how to build a blog that generates 1000+ hits per day in a reasonable amount of time (say 1 year from the start) with about as much effort as an independent blogger could be expected to put into it. Here are my benchmarks for where I think that a blog should roughly be after one year if the blog expects 1000+ hits per day in traffic:

  • 1,000+ entries
  • Post 3-5x per day
  • 50,000+ Twitter followers
  • 10,000+ Facebook friends/Likes on blog page
  • Well represented on Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, MySpace
  • 100+ reciprocal links with blogs in niche (i.e. blogroll)
  • Extensive use of multimedia (pictures, video, etc.) on blog
  • Good design and content
Okay, before I start getting complaints about how unrealistic these goals are for a one year old blog, just let me say that I never said it was easy to get 1000+ visitors per day on a blog. In fact, I think it's pretty hard. The most visitors I've ever managed to get for one day are about 800, and I thought that I was doing pretty well to get that amount. However, I know that other, more well established blogs, regularly get well in excess of 1000 visitors per day, and I am starting to see how they can accomplish this -- mainly through hard work and persistence. So, here is my breakdown of each of the bullet points above.

1,000+ entries: Unless you're God's gift to blogging, you really need a lot of posts to generate large amounts of traffic. The more entries you have on a blog, the more chance that you have of getting visitors for "back end" or syndication traffic for posts that you wrote 6 months ago and forgot. With 1,000+ posts, you only have to rely on each post to generate 1 hit per day from syndication -- a pretty reasonable goal in my experience. Plus, search engines LOVE big blogs, and you're much more likely to get search traffic from a 1,000 entry blog than a 10 page blog, even if the 10 entry blog has a lot more useful content per entry.

Post 3-5x per day: I think that this point mostly follows from the arguments for a large blog above. If you can get about 50 visitors per day per post, then why not post 5x per day and get 50 visitors per time from your new posts alone? Besides, any good site need constant new content to keep it going. People don't tend to read most articles more than once, even if the article is well written. So, you have to keep feeding the beast.

For those of you who think this is posting too much, let me point out that most of the top 100 blogs post at least 20x per day with the Huffington Post putting up 200+ posts per day on most days. So, if you want traffic like TechCrunch, you have to post a lot -- just like TechCrunch does. Again, I never said it would be easy.

50,000+ Twitter followers: Twitter is a singularly useful tool for generating lots of blog traffic at a low cost. But, it's also a numbers game. The more people you have, the more traffic you can ultimately generate, even if a lot of your followers are bots or spammers. After all, you can ignore the spammers if necessary (like I do) with filters and just interact with your readers.

Also, the one year time frame for this is pretty doable. All you need to do is add about 150 people per day, which is very realistic through using a service like justunfollow.com and adding/subtracting around 300-400 people per day on average.

10,000 Facebook friends/Likes on blog page: The logic for this is pretty similar to the Twitter followers statement above. The more people you have seeing/thinking about your blog everyday, the more chances you have to attract readers and visitors. Again, it's ultimately a numbers game, especially as far as social media is concerned.

If you can manage to get as little as 30 people either friending or liking your Facebook account and page per day, you can hit 10,000 in a year's time.

Well represented on Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, MySpace: The logic here is pretty much the same as the argument for having lots of Twitter followers. Again, the more tentacles that you have in cyberspace, the more chances someone has to find your blog.

100+ reciprocal links with blogs in niche (i.e. blogroll): This point was one that took me a while to realize, but it's a point well worth mentioning. A lot of the bigger blogs, especially those by names like Problogger or John Chan, tend to share a lot of traffic. So, while other bloggers in your niche are your competitors, they are also strangely allies in driving traffic to your blog (and vice versa).

If you can manage to add just two reciprocal links per week, this is an easily obtainable goal in a year's time.

If possible, you should establish reciprocal blogs links with as many of these other bloggers as possible, even if the other blog doesn't have a huge following (yet).

Extensive use of multimedia (pictures, video, etc.) on blog: Sometimes when I'm visiting a blog, I'm looking to read a novel. Sometimes, I'm just looking to watch a funny video or see some cool pictures. Your blog should have both, at least as much as possible. Some of my highest traffic blog entries are where I link to pictures or lists of images.

Good design and content: Ultimately, it doesn't matter how good you are at using social media and SEO to drive traffic to your blog. If your content or layout for your blog is crappy, people aren't going to come back (or stay for very long once they arrive). Content really is king, especially if you expect your posts to generate a lot of traffic in syndication.

I hope that I've given people a good understanding of how it should be possible (at least in theory) to generate 1,000 blog visitors per day in a year or less. Good luck in the blogsphere!

5 Reasons Why I Post 5 Times Per Day

A lot of people (i.e. more than 2) have asked me recently why I post so damn much on my blog. Well, here is a list of five reasons why I post 5 times per day (or more) on my blog.

"a compass was there to get you thinking"

1. I work at a desk job where I have to generate, debug, and run computer code all day. Hence, I have a lot of time on my hands.

2. Some people think that everything that they write is worthy of the Pulitzer. I however, don't think that my stuff is that good. So, I try to make up in volume what I lack in quality.

3. I am vain. I like to see people visiting my blog. As the chances of this are increased greatly if I have lots of posts, I write more blog entries.

4. Somehow, I keep finding tons of content every day that I want to "borrow" from other internet sites. When I stop finding good content, I'll stop writing so much.

5. Because I can.

Seriously though, if you have a blog (like me) that you're semi-serious about and you're not posting at least twice per day, your blog isn't going to generate any long term traffic. Think about it this way: of all the news stories (essentially like blog posts) and how-to articles you've read online in the past 6 months, how many of them have you read twice?

Hell, I don't even read my entries twice usually, and I write them!

If you aren't constantly generating new content, your audience has moved on and found another website to surf.

So, bloggers, write more content.

5 Tips to Grow Blog to 1000+ visitors per day

Building your blog traffic from scratch can seem like a long and daunting task, especially when you're just starting out. It can seem like hours of effort and work on your blog will only bring an additional 10-20 visitors, and the traffic levels are hard to sustain without constant effort. However, I want to share with you five simple tips and strategies that will vastly increase your blog visitors and blog traffic.

1. Realize that blog traffic growth is exponential, not linear: One of the biggest mistakes that bloggers make is to give up on their blog right when the traffic is ready to explode. The reason for this is that they fail to realize that blog traffic growth is exponential, not linear. Let me define these terms so that you can understand what I'm talking about.

Linear Growth: This means that your blog will grow at a constant rate proportional to the effort that you put into it. For example, if blog growth was linear, for every 100 hour you put into the blog, your traffic might increase by 1000 visitors per month. So, starting with 1000 visitors per month, after 6 months x 100 hours of work = 6,000 visitors per month if the increase in blog traffic is linear.

Exponential Growth: Here, blog traffic will increase at an every increasing rate proportional to the amount of work you put into it. As an example, lets say that, for every 100 hours of work you put into your blog, the monthly traffic doubles. In this model, after 6 months and starting with 1000 visitors, your blog traffic would be 1000*2*2*2*2*2*2 = 64,000 visitors per month, 58,000 more than if the growth were linear.

The downside of exponential growth in blog traffic is that it means that when you're starting out, the growth rate for your blog is going to be pretty slow. For example, if you start with a blog with only 100 visitors per month, 100 hours of work might only increase that to 50 visitors per month -- meaning you won't have much to show for your work right away. However, the key here is that you have to keep trying because the rewards will come, especially when you start to experience the type of insane, run away growth that comes on the back end of your blog. Many bloggers give up just when their blog is on the brink of exploding in terms of the traffic.

2. Use Social Media effectively: The second thing you should do is to make sure that you're using social media effectively to promote your blog. This process has basically two parts: posting your blog entries to social media and making sure that lots of people see those posts.

For the first part, you can use a service like Onlywire to send out each post to a variety of social media services, including Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Digg, Reddit, and more. If you have a large following on Twitter account, you also want to use Tweet Random to tweet out old copies of your blog posts so that your previous work doesn't go to waste.

I've already written one article about how to get lots of followers for Twitter and the other social media services. Basically, the method I follow is: a) follow lots of people and b) unfollow anyone who doesn't follow you back. There are some more tips I explain in the article above, including which internet services to use to easily follow and unfollow from Twitter, but this is the basic idea.

3. Use lots of pictures, videos, and interactive features in your posts: People often forget that the best blog posts have a variety of pictures, videos, songs, and interactive features (such as polls or games) to reinforce the text. Your readers don't just want information; they also want to be entertained. You should make every effort to put lots of pictures, videos, and interactive applets into your posts so that your blog will stick out in the minds of readers and keep them coming back for more.

4. Use basic SEO: Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is something that the largest commercial websites can spend millions of dollars per year to perfect. However, you can make significant improvements to your blog's ranking in a search engine by making small, free changes to your posts.

First, always make sure to include 4-7 search tags in the body of your posts. These tags should be geared around terms that people would look for if they were searching for the information you have in your article. Also, if you can do a little keyword research and try to target keywords that are popular but not too popular (like "Twitter" or "Google"), the results will be even better.

Second, make sure that you repeat your targeted keywords often throughout the body of your post. Since this article is about getting 1000+ visitors to your blog, I need to make sure that I keep repeating the phrase "1000+ visitors" or "blog" frequently enough that the search engines catch on to what my post is about. Obviously, you don't want to go too overboard with this idea and repeat "1000+ visitors" every five words, but even repeating the term as frequently as 10 -15 times in a given post couldn't hurt.

Third, make sure that you organize your posts into lists. Lists are not only easier for people to read, they're easier for search engines to understand as well.

Fourth, make sure that you have a catchy and relevant title to your post with as many targeted keyworkds in it as possible. Search engines place a lot of emphasis on the title of a blog post in ranking the post, and you should always make your titles as specific and relevant as possible.

5. Post frequently: Often bloggers will get stuck in the mindset that they should make one long, epic masterpiece of a post per month. If you're writing your blog for posterity, I guess this is a good strategy to follow. However, if you're writing your blog to attract visitors, you may want to rethink this idea.

In general, a blog post should be 300-2000 words. Anything longer than 2000 words should be broken up into multiple posts.

Summary: Using these strategies should help you to get your blog traffic flowing. Even though it may seem like an ambitious goal, 1,000 visitors per day on a blog is a goal that is both realistic and attainable with hard work and efficient strategies.
