Closing in on 200 Visitors Per Day for My Blog

I just wanted to write a quick post to note that my blog is closing back in on 200 visitors per day. A few months ago, it had traffic levels well above this, but then I changed over to www.futuretwit.com from my former blogspot address, and the traffic levels fell to where I was barely getting over 100 visitors per day for a while.

I am also much more optimistic about the traffic this time. The cool thing is that about 70% of my traffic, on average, comes from search engine traffic, which means that it might have a lot more staying power than the traffic that comes from Twitter. Also, the traffic this time around is spread out over a lot more of my entries than it was before. Previously, I used to have one or two entries that would get all of my traffic and the rest of my entries would have a few hits here or there.

If you have any strategies to generate traffic for my blog, please leave them in a comment below. Thanks.

The Lies of Fox News -- Politifact Video

What? Fox news never lies to us. I thought that Fox News and Rupert Murdock loved us?!

So, yeah, for those of you living under a rock for the past 20 years, sometimes Fox news can tend to bend the truth in tiny and almost unrecognizable ways. Or, sometimes they can just blatantly lie. This video outlines the lies of Fox News -- courtesy of Politifact.

Reason to Post to Blog Daily -- You're Not That Good

William Shakespeare (1564-1616)Image via Wikipedia
I always hear this same controversy in the blogsphere: quality versus quantity. I just want to bring one fact to the attention of bloggers everywhere:

Your articles aren't good enough for you to only post once per week.

They probably aren't good enough for you to post only once per day.

Everyone thinks that other people's farts stink and theirs don't. Everyone thinks other people's writing stinks but they're the new Shakespeare. I have a different take: I know that my writing is nothing exceptional. That's why I post something AT LEAST twice per day.

See, my hope is that, in the midst of the mediocre stuff that I post, someone will find a jewel, something that they can use and forward to all of their friends. The more I write, the more chance I have of that happening.

Even if they don't find a jewel, I hope that they can at least find something useful enough to keep them coming back to my blog. That would be nice. But the idea that people should only write one post per week or even per month is just silly. Blog writers, with few exceptions, just aren't that good.

Even if someone was trying to follow the Shakespeare or Stephen King model, it's important to remember that even those accomplished writers put out a lot of crap in their day. For every Romeo and Juliet there was a Tristan and Isolde, or an equally forgettable play, buried somewhere beneath.

I will concede the point, however, that bloggers should write entries longer than two sentences and about things people want to read too. However, if you can't write a post more interesting to your audience everyday than, "Use Twitter. It's awesome!" of "The cat threw up on the carpet again.", maybe you should take up Pinochle instead.

5 Reasons Why I Post 5 Times Per Day

A lot of people (i.e. more than 2) have asked me recently why I post so damn much on my blog. Well, here is a list of five reasons why I post 5 times per day (or more) on my blog.

"a compass was there to get you thinking"

1. I work at a desk job where I have to generate, debug, and run computer code all day. Hence, I have a lot of time on my hands.

2. Some people think that everything that they write is worthy of the Pulitzer. I however, don't think that my stuff is that good. So, I try to make up in volume what I lack in quality.

3. I am vain. I like to see people visiting my blog. As the chances of this are increased greatly if I have lots of posts, I write more blog entries.

4. Somehow, I keep finding tons of content every day that I want to "borrow" from other internet sites. When I stop finding good content, I'll stop writing so much.

5. Because I can.

Seriously though, if you have a blog (like me) that you're semi-serious about and you're not posting at least twice per day, your blog isn't going to generate any long term traffic. Think about it this way: of all the news stories (essentially like blog posts) and how-to articles you've read online in the past 6 months, how many of them have you read twice?

Hell, I don't even read my entries twice usually, and I write them!

If you aren't constantly generating new content, your audience has moved on and found another website to surf.

So, bloggers, write more content.
