THE OTHER HALF OF THE YEAR

THE OTHER HALF OF THE YEAR

Guest post written by my buddy Bernardo Graham

My husband loves to watch football on DIRECTV Sunday Ticket. During football season, our routine changes. We usually go to my parent’s house in the evening for Sunday night dinner when football is not in season. It is my favorite thing to do on Sundays. My mom is a really great cook. My sister and her husband come over to my parent’s house too. We bring our dogs and spend the evening drinking wineand spending time with family. When football season rolls around, my parents come over to our house or we go to theirs and all of the guys spend the evening watching television. They just don’t sit around the table and visit. They are up in the air, hooting and hollering at the tv. I have to say, I really can’t wait until the end of January so that we can turn the football off and sit down for dinner every Sunday like we do for the other half of the year. Normalcy is quickly approaching, only a few more weeks!

Dmitri Dancing -- A Video Compilation

One of the trending things on Youtube lately has been a video of this guy named Dmitri from Russia being interviewed in a nightclub by an attractive reporter. At one point during the interview, the reporter says something to make Dmitri very happy, and he ends the interview by doing a series of quirky yet appealing dance steps.

As the original audio for the video is in Russian, I have no idea what the guy actually says. However, the subtitled takes on what he says are quite humorous. Here are my favorite examples:

1. Gibson gets sold ...

2. Bin Laden's Death

3. Dimitri the Virgin

4. And The Original Dmitri video

Of course, if you only came to see pictures of sexy Russian girls, like the one interviewing him, here are a few pics.

Where's Wall-e?

Can you find Wall-e in the sea of other robots in this very cool picture I found online? More importantly, can you tell which are robots and which aren't? How about identifying where each of the robots comes from?

The Days of Summer!

When I look back on my joyous days of childhood and remember jumping into the pool, my heart fills with warmth. Of course, at the time, I guess nothing could be further from the truth. I was terrified of swimming in any sort of a pool, let alone the big and deep pool at my local junior high school. All of that changed when I met Mr. Startsky.

Mr. Startsky was an unassuming gentleman. He was a lifelong bachelor, never having been married before (at least not that I am aware). By day, he was a janitor at my school and an assistant coach on the high school football team. But, when he wasn't being just an ordinary guy, he was busy being my pool savior!

Before Mr. Startsky's tutelage, I was a terrible swimmer, and the pool chemicals burned my eyes. I remember many afternoons when I would hang back after gym class to practice swimming, and I would find Mr. Startsky there, just watching me as I made my pathetic attempts to swim in the pool. He would watch me off and on for literally hours while he went about his duties, always with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye, never saying a word. This went on for weeks, until one day Mr. Startsky finally broke the silence. It was at the end of the day, when nearly everyone else had left the pool.

"Say, young man, do you want to learn how to swim properly?" Mr. Startsky called out to me.

"Do I mister?" I replied, "Sure thing!"

"Well boy, just stay there then, right where you are. Don't move a muscle till I come back." With that, he left for almost fifteen minutes. When he returned, to my surprise, he was in an old pair of swimming trunks! Without a word, he jumped into the water next to me.

"Come over here boy!" he called out. I swam over to him as best I could. Suddenly, he grabbed me and turned me over on my back. "This is how you swim boy," he instructed as he gently put his arm under me and moved my arms back and forth. "Exactly like this."

I can't even begin to describe the fun times we had together, frolicking together in the pool, swimming together for hours on end, and then relaxing in the hot tub. You know the best part? I really learned how to swim from old Mr. Startsky, even considering his crazy obsession with pool accessories!

Express Scripts vs. Walgreens -- America's Choice

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

If there is a bright center to the universe, then Express Scripts exists (spiritually) on the planet farthest from that center.

At least, that's what I feel about Express Scripts now after reading this statement on their heinous activities towards innocent customers at this link:

Walgreens and Express Scripts

To summarize, Express Script is a company that acts as sort of a middleman between pharmaceutical companies and pharmacies. In January of 2012, Express scripts made the decision to exclude Walgreens from their network, effectively ending Walgreens ability to provide drugs to millions of paying customers. If this wasn't evil enough in itself, the worst part is the people who are most affected: the elderly and veterans. Instead of having the convenience of going to their local pharmacies to have prescriptions filled by pharmacists they know and trust, thousands of elderly folks have been forced to interrupt their extremely hectic lives and sometimes drive minutes or hours out of the way -- often to seedy parts of town -- in an effort to fill their prescriptions for life saving drugs to stave of diseases like diabetes and dementia. These customers are angry, and I don't blame them.

While Walgreens can only do so much to help these folks in situations like this, they are helping. One of the things that Walgreens has done is to start a new program, the details of which can be found here: Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens.  For just 10$ per year for families (5$ per year for individuals), customers can join an ever expanding group of users to ensure that their prescription supply comes at a deep discount. Membership in this club includes deep discounts on over 8,000 types of  drugs, discount flu shots and diabetic supplies, and reduced film processing.

In this Super PAC commercial from comedian Stephen Colbert, a convincing case for Mitt Romney being a serial killer is made.

Admittedly, the logic does follow from Mitt's statement that corporations are people and from his line of work at Bain. I wonder how many people will take this commercial seriously.

Bad Breath, Hunger, and Alcohol Level Detector Apps for Android.

Want to check if you have bad breath, are hungry, or are drunk? Well, now there's an app for that. Watch the video below to see what I mean.

Of course, you DO need the fancy attachment that they showed you in the video. However, it's still pretty impressive that they were able to condense down the system to something that could be run from an Android phone.

Ken Jennings Hoe-Jeopardy

"What is a hoe?" is the question that Ken Jennings picked for this next answer. To me, it seems like just as valid of an answer as the correct answer "What is a rake?" The latter word hasn't been in use since the 1800s, IIRC.

Alex's reaction is priceless.

Shameless Flirtation with a Sports Reporter at a Hockey Game

I found this little gem of a video that I wanted to share. It's a Blackhawks fan shamelessly flirting with a pretty reporter as she interviews him out on the ice.

The best part was that she seemed genuinely flattered by the compliment.

Official Doctrine for Christianity? A Simple Flowchart

Nailing Christian doctrine down can be like trying to nail jello to the wall, especially when a stalwart defender of the faith is trying to get people to forget about some of the more undesirable aspects of Christian history. However, I found a simple flowchart online that should go a long way to clarifying what is Christian doctrine and what is not.

Official Christian Doctrine: Whatever is untestable and makes you feel good.

I hope that this clarifies things. This particular flowchart is geared towards the Mormon version of Christianity, but it should work well with other Christian sects too.

Crime Dramas

Crime Dramas

I appreciate the guest post, Marian Combs

I have a little bit of an addiction to crime dramas. I will watch any of them, regardless of whether or not they’re even really good shows. If there is a marathon of Law and Order: SVU on, I can pretty much guarantee that I will be sitting in front of it, wiling away hours of time that I should really be using to do something productive. I can’t help it; it’s a sickness at this point. I don’t even like CSI: Miami, but I will absolutely sit on the couch and watch back to back episodes on a Sunday. One of my favorites is Criminal Minds. I think it’s one of the few that isn’t completely predictable, and most of the shows are actually fairly intelligent. My least favorite is Law and Order: Criminal Intent, for the sole reason that I can’t stand the character of Goren. He is supposed to be a charmingly neurotic, from what I can gather, but he mostly just comes off as completely crazy for the most part. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still watch it if it’s on. I’ll just be really annoyed by his character the entire time I’m watching it. See if you can Buy Direct TV and see for yourself.

Copper Pipe Magnet

Here is a cool video of what happens when you drop a magnet into a copper pipe. The time delay in the magnet reaching the bottom of the pipe is caused by the electromotive force resisting the movement of the magnet.

Catholic Guilt: Overcoming Bowel Movements

What young men do in the privacy of a bathroom isn't just between them and their bodies -- it's also being watched by someone higher. As a result, that ancient evil that all young men -- and some young women -- engage in should be avoided: bowel movements. This next video explains why and how.

Jack Bauer Interrogates Santa Claus

As advertised, this is a fan-made movie that splices together footage from 24 with that of an old Christmas movie to make it look like Jack Bower is interrogating Santa Claus.

The resulting video is pretty funny.
