BYU Modesty: What You're Wearing
I found a cool meme on BYU modesty to go alone with the Brittany Molina post that I wrote earlier. It has three categories: "What you're actually wearing", "What society thinks you're wearing", and "What the creep in the study hall thinks you're wearing".

BYU -- Strangest University in America?
Is BYU the strangest university in America? I often ask myself that question, and many times the answer seems to be yes.
Take the story of the letter below, for example.
The back story on this note is that it was given to a girl named Brittany Molina, who is currently a student at Brigham Young University. It was Valentines day, and she was sitting in the library studying. Suddenly, an awkward boy walked up to her and handed her a folded not. Excited that it might be a love note or something, she unfolded it. Below is an image of the note that she received.
The text of the note reads as follows:
"You may want to consider that what you're wearing has a negative effect on men (and women) around you. Many people come to this university because they feel safe, morally as well as physically, here. They expect others to abide by the Honor Code that we agreed on. Please consider your commitment to the Honor Code (which you agreed to) when dressing each day. Thank you."
To me, this is just a creepy sentiment on the part of the guy who handed the note to her. Even if she was wearing something salacious, he would need to grow up and stop objectifying women. However, the fact that she was wearing this should be some indication of exactly how disturbed this guy is in his mind. I mean, seriously dude? You're going to bust a girl because she is wearing a long shirt and tights? Perhaps you should move to Saudi Arabia where all of the girls wear burqas. No chance of getting horny there, unless you have a fetish for girls in a burlap sack. Come to think of it, maybe that's what you'd prefer girls at BYU to wear instead of fashionable clothes?
On a stronger note, I am sick of this kind of crap from the Mormon church in general and BYU in particular. They pretend to be the defenders of women and morality on some level, but then they go and do just the opposite by objectifying the hell out of them in real life. It's the strange Madonna vs. the Whore dichotomy that a lot of fundamentalist religions have. On the one hand, they talk up the idea of sexual purity and the chastity of women. On the other hand, they simultaneously belittle women by assigning all of their worth in life based on their sexual purity. Never mind if a woman has a mind and an opinion on something. Instead, her worth as a potential mate is determined by questions like these: How many kids is she willing to pump out after marriage? Has she slept with anyone before marriage? How many earrings does she wear in each ear?
And, if you don't believe me, let me illustrate this point a bit further. For as much as this guy complains about this girl Brittany Molina dressing the way that he did, I bet he is incredibly shallow about looks in real life. Most of the guys that I've known over the years that are this way place an extraordinarily high value on a girl's physical appearance. They're the same guys that won't even give a girl a second look if she DOESN'T dress fashionably, doesn't do her make up, or if she is a little overweight. Based on how this guy reacted to Britney, I would be very, very surprised if he wasn't completely shallow about a girl's looks when it came to dating.
Women of BYU: it is time to stand up to these chauvinistic clowns so they can't control your thoughts any longer. Unite!

BYU dancer 'counseled' for showing too much skin on SYTYCD
Image via WikipediaTalk about an overreaction! This competitor on So You Think You Can Dance was actually "counseled" by his church (the Mormons) after he wore a "skimpy" outfit to perform a modern dance piece. If contemporary dance is such a threat to BYU, maybe they should just put everyone in the university in burqa, lest the image of the human body offends their god/gods. The video clip is in the link (unable to embed, sorry).
It's instances like this where I think BYU gets its reputation for being a stodgy and overbearing school. Making sure that people don't drink or have extra-marital sex is one thing. Criticizing one of your student athletes for their costume during a competition is another. Every time I think that BYU can't get any lamer, they surprise me yet again.

Neil DeGrass Tyson @ BYU - are you religious?
One of the things that I love about Neil DeGrass Tyson is that he is one cool cat when it comes to helping people accept controversial science. Instead of taking a more aggressive approach to the question of science versus religion (like Christopher Hitchens), he actually manages to help people understand and accept things like evolution and the Big Bang without alienating them from the start.
Here is a great example of his style from when he spoke at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. For a little background, BYU is a religious university for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons). The Mormons are part of the group in America that believes in a sola scriptora view of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, and a few other sacred texts that they have (at least on a leadership level -- some of the members are more liberal). This means that the leaders of the church routinely speak of things like Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel, etc. like they're actual events in history, not metaphors. Normally, this would raise the ire of most scientists, mainly because the fact that such events did not occur in the Earth's history is provable scientifically, at least up to the point where eveything starts becoming a miracle where the laws of nature have been suspended (think Santa Clause).
Despite this, Dr. Tyson still has enough class to answer the inquisitive young girl in this clip gently when she asks him if he's religious. The answer is no, but he tells her that in a nice way.
I am sure he's one cool cat in real life.

Utah vs BYU: A Parent's Dilemma (60 sec.)
This has to be one of the best funny videos or parodies about the BYU vs. Utah rivalry that I've ever seen. It's so good, in fact, that I am going to share it with you, my loyal readers, on my blog. The sad thing about the video though is that the reaction from the BYU fan parents is only slightly exaggerated. Awesome parody though!
